About Mythreal.AI
What is this?
Mythreal.AI is a project to create a game master for a roleplaying game (like Dungeons & Dragons) that can guide players through an interactive adventure.
Computer games have been doing that since ADVENT (AKA Colossal Cave Adventurea>) in the 1970s. But, even today, such games limit players to specific actions that the creators of the adventure anticipated. The best ones tell great stories, but they tell those stories to the player, not with the player.
Sandbox and physics-engine-based games (e.g., Minecraft), on the other hand, allow players to create amazing things the creator did not anticipate. But they sacrifice the story: any that emerges is the player's sole responsibility.
With computer games, it seems like you can have either a good story or player agency, but you can't have both. This project strives to bridge that gap. Its goals are to apply AI models:
- to better "understand" what players want to do in terms of the system's rules
- to model how players' actions impact the world
- to determine how the world (and its inhabitants) react to that impact
But please note that the project is in its early stages, and fully none of that is part of the initial test.
Is this like Novel.AI or AIDungeon?
No. Those are not games. They use extremely sophisticated text prediction to generate responses to user input. They don't have a rules system at all, struggle to keep track of context, and have limited support for structured content. That doesn't mean they're not good, it just means they're not this. Novel.AI is at the forefront of autocomplete as an interactive medium. Check them out if you're looking for help to write your own story. They're also a good fit if you don't want the constraint of a rules system.
If you're looking for challenges you can't overcome by typing "I snap my fingers, and it explodes into smithereens," you're in the right place.
Who is behind this?
We are a team of over eighty industry experts in gaming and AI. We have raised $1.2 billion in venture capital to create the next generation of emergent gameplay and interactive, collaborative storytelling.
Nah, just kidding.
I'm a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University, but I am doing this on my own. While I have high hopes for the future, this is more of an academic project than a commercial one right now. I can be reached at owlbear@mythreal.ai, but between classes, work, and this project, I may not be able to answer all inquiries.
